These worksheets practise finding an unknown value while keeping both sides of an equation equal. Each question has one variable, x, and an exact solution. The answer section shows the isolation steps instead of only the final value, making it possible to discuss which operation reverses a term and why a proposed answer satisfies the original equation.

A few useful answers

Does this include every kind of linear equation?

No. This version covers one-step and two-step equations with a single occurrence of x and integer coefficients. It does not generate variables on both sides, brackets requiring distribution, systems of equations or inequalities. The mixed setting combines the supported families; it should not be read as an unrestricted algebra syllabus.

Why are some half-mode answers whole numbers?

Half mode deliberately combines integer solutions with solutions whose reduced denominator is two. This lets learners encounter both without assuming that every answer must contain a fraction. Worked results remain exact. The setting does not introduce thirds, recurring decimals or arbitrary rational coefficients.

Can I give students only the questions?

Yes. Turn off answers before exporting, or print only the question portion of the PDF. If you keep answers enabled for your own copy, the answer pages follow the questions in the same order. The selected preview page controls an individual PNG, SVG or Share image, so choose the intended sheet before sharing.

Choose a focused equation practice set

A painted mathematics workspace with exercise sheets, number blocks and a pencil for worked solutions.

One-step questions use a single addition, subtraction or multiplication relationship involving x. Two-step questions combine an integer coefficient with an added or subtracted constant. Mixed mode alternates the two families. These settings describe the structure of the equation rather than a school grade or standardized difficulty level; preview the set before deciding whether it suits the learner.

Choose a coefficient range of five or ten. This controls the sampled small integer values used to build the equation; it is not a promise that every value printed on the right side will stay below that number. Review the order of operations worksheet first if a learner is confusing the expression on one side with the equality between both sides.

Follow exact operations on both sides

The integer option uses whole-number solutions. The halves option alternates integer and half-integer answers, displayed as exact fractions where necessary. The generator uses integer numerator and denominator arithmetic, avoiding a rounded decimal answer that only approximately balances the equation. Negative values can be enabled separately so that signs can be introduced after the basic isolation process is understood.

In a two-step equation, the worked key first removes the constant term and then divides by the coefficient. A subtracted term is reversed by adding its positive amount to both sides. A negative coefficient remains part of the division. Use fraction exercises as a companion when interpreting a rational answer becomes a separate obstacle from understanding the equation.

Check the solution in the original question

Choose six, twelve or twenty-four questions. Each question page contains up to six exercises, with room for working. When answers are enabled, all question pages come first and the worked sheets follow in the same grouping. A variant number fixes the generated values, so another export with the same settings reproduces the same mathematics and order.

After solving, substitute the value into the original equation and calculate both sides. This check is independent of merely copying the final line in the key. If a sign or multiplication fact is wrong, identify the earliest step where equality stopped being preserved. Short arithmetic worksheets can support a specific calculation skill without turning every equation lesson into a review of unrelated operations.

Six two-step equations

Choose two steps, integer solutions, range five, six questions and variant 17, with negative numbers off and answers on. Use A4 portrait. The PDF has one exercise sheet followed by one worked-answer sheet, suitable for practising the same two-stage isolation process across a short set.

A mixed set with halves and signs

Choose mixed equations, whole numbers and halves, range ten, twelve questions and variant 31. Enable negative numbers and answers on A4 portrait. The export contains two question sheets followed by two answer sheets. Compare each worked solution with a substitution into its original equation.
