Ready for your printer
A word ladder connects spellings through small, visible changes. This editor checks that each neighboring pair differs at exactly one position and keeps the same length. That structural check is useful when preparing a worksheet, but the author still decides whether the words, clues and vocabulary are appropriate for the people who will solve it.
💡A few useful answers
Can the generator find a path between two words?
No. Ready mode offers three authored English paths, and custom mode checks a complete path you supply. Entering only two endpoints is not enough: the editor does not search a dictionary, choose intermediate vocabulary or infer definitions.
Can I write a custom ladder in another language?
Yes, if the entries use letters, have equal grapheme lengths and each pair changes one grapheme. This is a spelling-based rule. It does not guarantee that a character corresponds to a single sound or that the activity fits every writing system equally well.
What happens when two neighboring words change twice?
The editor reports the chain as invalid and keeps export unavailable until the path is corrected. Check the spelling, accents and letter case in both rows. A repeated word is also rejected because a step must make one actual change.
Choose a chain with a clear purpose
✏️Three ready English chains connect CAT to DOG, COLD to WARM and HEAD to TAIL. They are fixed collections, not results from a live dictionary search. Select a chain to inspect its length and planned intermediate steps before printing. A word scramble worksheet offers a related spelling activity when you want to reorder a word’s letters instead of changing one position at a time.
The first and last words remain visible on the puzzle page. Each intermediate row has the correct number of empty boxes, and the optional position hint identifies which box changes from the previous row. This clue reduces the search space without supplying the new letter. Turning the hint off keeps exactly the same intended path, so it changes the support provided rather than generating a different chain.
Control the hints without changing the route
The supplied answer page shows every word in order. It establishes the route entered by the author, but does not prove that no other valid route exists. A solver may find another sequence that obeys the changes and reaches the same endpoint. Compare that sequence with the agreed vocabulary rules rather than marking it wrong simply because it differs from the printed key.
Custom mode accepts one word per line with an optional clue after a vertical bar. Enter three to eight distinct words, all between two and eight text characters of equal length. Neighboring words must change exactly one character. The editor counts complete grapheme clusters, preserving accents and case; it does not treat differently written forms as automatically equivalent or decide which combinations are dictionary words.
Prepare a custom ladder carefully
📝Write clues that identify the intended meaning without copying the answer. A broad clue such as an animal may permit several choices, while a more precise clue can make a particular intermediate step useful. Keep clues short enough to sit alongside the letter boxes. If you want intersecting answers and a larger set of definitions, use the custom crossword maker for that different layout.
Before sharing a custom ladder, solve it from top to bottom using only the visible clues. Check every spelling in the language you chose, and make sure a case change is intentional. For learners who first need to practise the same words separately, prepare a spelling practice sheet from the vocabulary. The ladder then becomes a later comparison task instead of the first exposure to unfamiliar words.

A ladder with position support
Select the ready CAT → DOG chain, show changed-position hints and include the answer page. Portrait A4 gives one puzzle page and one supplied solution page. The starting and ending words are visible on the puzzle; the two intermediate words are blank.
Choose ready COLD → WARM, turn position hints off and leave answers enabled on portrait A4. The five-word chain gives three blank intermediate rows. Use the separate key to discuss the planned changes after the learner has attempted a route.
