Folding instructions

Cut only the outer rectangle. Dashed marks are starting creases; follow the numbered diagrams for later folds.

  1. Use the cut 1:2 rectangle, plain side up. Crease lengthwise down the middle and reopen.

  2. Crease both diagonals of the top square and reopen. Fold backwards across their crossing, then reopen.

  3. Push the sides of the top square inward along the creases and flatten into a triangular roof.

  4. Lift the two front triangle corners to the top point, making a small diamond.

  5. Fold the long sides to the centre beneath the front flaps.

  6. Bring the bottom edge up to the centre of the small top diamond; crease the horizontal hinge.

  7. Fold that raised flap halfway back down, creating a zigzag spring.

  8. Turn the frog over. Press the rear fold down on a firm surface and release.

Folding instructions

The final zigzag fold stores the small push that makes the frog hop when released.

A few useful answers

Do I need a square?

This version starts directly from a rectangle twice as long as it is wide; the template keeps that ratio.

Why does it not jump?

Check the rear zigzag fold, use a firm surface and release your finger quickly. Soft or damp paper springs less.

Can I print only the frog paper?

Choose Template only to make another frog without reprinting the two instruction sheets.

Jumping origami frog

Set a paper target on the table and count how many attempts land inside. Use a different pattern for each player.

Try a medium-sized frog first. Very small models become thick near the spring and need careful creasing.
